Tobias

Jacob Noll

Tobias is the main character in the book; his wife’s name is Emma. Tobias MacIvey has a son named Zech. Tobias and his family live in the scrubs in Florida. He hunts to provide for his family and so they have food on the table. Tobias eventually finds a cow and decides to turn cattle herding into his own business. He meets a Seminole Indian named Keith Tiger who helps him by giving him a marshtackie and two dogs to herd the cattle with. He gets a group of men to herd cattle with him and they become rich. Towards the end of Tobias’ life he cherishes his orange grove and his dying words to Zech are to replant all the trees that died in the harsh winter they had. His role is leading his family and men to herd cattle and to provide for his family.

Tobias grew up in an age when there was not much technology. He taught his son how to hunt and when Zech was little they shot a bull. Growing up in this time, Tobias and his family had to live off of the land. There were not grocery stores where they could buy food. They could trade, but Tobias would have to make do with his land in order to survive. Before they started their herding business they traded coon skins for flour and other ingredients that Emma had to prepare for food. This relates them to the environment because they have to use what they have sparingly. They know that they have to share the land with the animals so that they can have hopes of survival.

Tobias experiences a strong sense of place in his orange groves. It took Tobias a long time to figure out how to have success with his orange trees. At first the cows were eating the orange trees because they were low to the ground and they were easy access for the cows. His wife Emma told him to get orange trees that are taller than the cows. The orange trees were a long process and he was very proud of them. When he was older, he couldn’t go on cattle drives anymore but he still had his orange grove. When he died he also lost his orange grove. Tobias left behind a legacy of hard work. He taught his kid Zech that hard work will get you far in life. Tobias worked hard to provide for his family and was very successful.

Tobias and I are alike because we put other people before ourselves. We make sure that everyone else’s needs are met before we take care of our own. Tobias gave his men a job opportunity that they would not have been given anywhere else. He helped out other people and that is something I strive to do on a daily basis.
